I'm sure all of you have that stray half ball of yarn sitting around and don't know what to do with it (or lots of them like me!). Can't throw it away, I might need it someday! Check out this photo/pattern I found on the web. It's a gorgeous slip stitch pattern that uses different scraps of leftover yarn to create a woven look.

What do you think of a Stash Buster Night at A Good Yarn? We can all bring our worsted weight scraps, trade them around, and knit up this slip stitch pattern! It could work with crochet too I'm athinkin'. Let me know if it sounds like fun for a Saturday night order pizza and drink wine kind of night at the shop! We could all get a jump on an early holiday gift with this one......

I surprised my husband for his birthday by flying our children in to go on the donkey ride down the Grand Canyon. This is something he's wanted to do for years and any of you who know me will know that I was not at all interested! This is so exciting!! Check Jeannie out! She actually looks happy to be washing glass shelves. :) The pic with the bags is what most of the store looked like when we started this morning. Then there's Sandy almost done with her chores! The store looks absolutely gorgeous! The light is brighter with a slightly lower ceiling and we are just thrilled with the results. I'll post the end product pics Weds. Maybe we could even open on Thursday.......we'll see how tomorrow goes!

MOUNTAIN SHADES CARDIGAN

It's finally done! I had so much fun making this sweater. It starts with a block in seed stitch. Knit so many inches and bind off. Turn it on it's side and pick up stitches to do stockinette. I used Noro's Aya, a cotton/wool/silk blend that has intense gorgeous colors. The pattern is from DanDo Designs by Yumiko Alexander. You know you want to make it....

Shawl-a-tini

A gorgeous cotton/viscose/silk/linen blend yarn creates this stunning shawl-a-tini! Feza Yarns- Alp Natural is the yarn. Use this free pattern from A Good Yarn:

MATERIALS
Approximately 300 yards of a DK weight yarn
One pair of size 13 needles, 24” circular
One stitch marker

Cast on 6 stitches and work as follows:
Row 1: Knit across all stitches
Row 2: K1, increase by knitting in the front and back of the next stitch, place marker, K4
Row 3: Repeat row 1
Row 4: K to 1 stitch before marker, increase in next stitch, slip marker, K4
Repeat rows 3 and 4 until you have 54 stitches total (50 stitches on one side of the marker and 4 on the other side) or until you have made half the shawl. NOTE: if you want a larger shawl, keep knitting and you may need more yarn.

Next Row: (Begins decreasing for the second half of the shawl)
Row 1: Knit to within 2 stitches of marker, knit 2 stitches together, slip marker, K4
Row 2: Knit across all stitches

Repeat rows 1 and 2 until 6 stitches remain, ending with row 2. Next Row: K2 stitches together, pull yarn through this stitch and tie off. Remove remaining stitches and gently unravel these all the way to the beginning to create a loop fringe.

Mystery Knit-Alongs

I don't know what it is about mystery knit-alongs, the anticipation, the unfolding of the pattern, or the not knowing of it all. I LOVE a good mystery. Take these fingerless mitts for instance. First, you got the cuff clue, then the wrist/palm, and last the thumb. Most knit-alongs include new techniques I didn't know. This mystery had a german twist cast-on. Never heard of it, now I love it!

This month's mystery knit-along is a sock with a new pattern I haven't tried. And it says a new heel technique! I can't wait! Sock Bite Nite A Huge Success!!

I have the best job in the whole world! We had 17 of us last Saturday night for "sock bite nite". Everyone brought in their sock scraps, threw them in the middle of the table, chose 7 or more colors, and started knitting a window pane sock. I will post pics as soon as I start seeing the finished products.

It was so fun! What other job can you order pizza, drink wine, and hang out with the best ladies I've ever met? None! Have I said I love my job....again?!

Oh boy, am I in trouble. We just unpacked over 100 pounds of new yarn! My favorite so far is the Queensland Kathmandu and Mist. Then again, the Cascade Lana D' Oro alpaca is fabulous. And their EcoDuo - 70% undyed baby alpaca/30% undyed merino is too soft and scrumptious! So many yarns, so little time! Here are a couple of pictures, but really, you just have to stop by and feel them!

Here it is! I named this pattern "Eternal Flame". I'm still in the process of writing the pattern but it is done! Thanks so much to Judith Nanson for knitting it for me. Made with Elsbeth Lavold's Silky Wool, the drape and feel are exquisite. This is not a pattern for the faint of heart though! It requires alot of adjustments to the pattern once you start the armhole and neck shaping. The pattern will say "decrease in pattern, good luck!". It is truly stunning and I LOVE it!

Design Your Own Patterns!

Wait till you see what we made out of the Elsbeth Lavold Silky Wool! I saw a tunic style cardigan in a Cold Water Creek catalog. I went to the store to look at it and, yuck! It was stiff and rough and not very pretty. I wonder if I could make this sweater out of something that has some drape. Well of course I can! Sweater Wizard to the rescue! Sweater Wizard is a program that allows me to plug in desired measurements, styles, etc and create a shell of a pattern. Judith, my friend and customer volunteered to knit it for me. We sat down and looked through all the stitch pattern books and chose one called candle flame. Judith knit it up and it fits perfectly! It's exactly what I had imagined it to be-- drapes nicely, just the right length, it blocked beautiful too! Stay tuned and I'll post a picture next time since we still have to do the edging.

You should try it! Find a pattern you like and recreate it! Graph paper works just as well if you don't want to buy Sweater Wizard.

SUMMER EYELET LACE SHAWL

Finished size: 42 ½” x 26” approximate (V shaped)

Materials: 459 yards superfine fingering yarn size 1
Size 5 circular needle 24”;

2 stitch markers;

Size F crochet needle for optional pico edge.

Gauge is not critical, a larger needle will give lacier look.

Special stitch: SKP: slip 1st st onto right hand needle as if to P, K 2nd st, pass slipped st over.

Set up: c/o one stitch, K, turn; P 1 st, turn
Incr 2 st in K st (3 st), turn; P3 st, turn
Incr 1 st at each end of K row (5 st), turn; P5, turn
Incr 1 st at each end of K row (7 st), turn; P7, turn
Incr 1 st at each end of K row (9 st) PLACING MARKER BTW 1st and 2nd st and btw 8th and 9th st (you should have 7 st btw markers); P9, turn
Begin pattern only on center 7 st, knitting odd rows and purling even rows

Continue in this manner, increasing 1 st at each end of every knit row, moving markers outward after having increased 7 st each side (every 14 rows). Incorporate the 7 st from each end into your lace pattern from wherever you are in the pattern.

Lace pattern: 7 stitch repeat

Row 1: *K2, K2tog, YO, K3, repeat across
Row 2 and all even rows: Purl
Row 3: *K1, K2tog, YO, K4, repeat across
Row 5 Knit
Row 7 *K3, YO, skp, K2, repeat across
Row 9 *K4, YO, skp, K1, repeat across
Row 11 Knit

Continue to end of skein (or desired width of shawl) and ending with a purl row (WS) saving enough yarn for bind off and for picot edge (unless using a contrasting yarn).

Bind off loosely with right side facing. Crochet picot edge if desired.

Optional Crocheted Picot edge: Join yarn (or a contrasting yarn) with sc in any corner, *sc in next 3 st, ch 4, sl st in top of last sc made*, repeat instructions between * around, making sure to make a 4 ch picot in each corner.

I've done it again! I have more than 4 projects going which I swore I would NOT do! But I just had to start these cute crochet felt slippers, and I have the Sock of the Month out of Regia Silk, (socks don't count as a project though), then that crochet shawl that's taking forever doesn't count either, and I still have the Swing Swagger Drape project going and all kinds of new yarns coming in- well, what's a girl to do? Do you have this problem too?

I tell you, I'm continually amazed at the talent of the fiber artists that come in our shop. Marlana just wove the most gorgeous bamboo and sugar cane scarf I have ever seen! Purple and fucia- exquisite! Johanna knits different texture stitches into blankets, hats and sweaters for charity, and fast too. You should see her tuck her needles under her armpits and fly! I've only seen a few people knit that way usually from Denmark or Holland. Dagmar just finished a beautiful kid mohair lace sweater speaking of fast knitters. And another lady, Judith, doesn't even look at her hands or stitches! And Jane puts together the best colorways for her crochet afghans- just wow. And so, what are you working on? We love show and tell so stop down and show us what you're doing!

Trade Show!

Hello bloggees! The trade show was great! The classes I took were awesome-- I didn't even know what I didn't know. Things that will help my cash flow and get you even more new yarns on a regular basis. Speaking of such, wait till you see the merino/cashmere/silk coming in this fall. A few new sock yarns- Mountain Colors, Shubui, Madeline Tosh. Debbie Macomber's new line has 2 new ones I especially liked Petal, which is superwash and angora sock yarn, and Wildflower a new washable kids yarn. I looked hard at Blue Heron and Great Adirondack yarns. Oh boy, we could be in real trouble here....... Let me know if there's a yarn you are particularly fond of and I'll take a look. Now's the time for fall ordering!

Fall Fibers!

Uh-oh. The Knitting Fever yarn rep was just here and all I can say is uh-oh. I can't believe the new fibers coming out for fall and I haven't even gotten to the trade show coming up next week. Uh-oh. Did you even know that Elsbeth Lavold's Silky Wool now comes in an Aran weight? I fell in love with Elsbeth Lavold's Favorite Wool too. 109 yards for $5, worsted weight and feltable! No need to buy 220 yards when you only want a splash of a color. Oh boy. These don't come in till September so I'm busy figuring out how I can pay for it........ Oh yes, and while I'm at the trade show I'll be ordering the most lovely stitch definition yarn ever- Trendsetter's Merino VI and VII. With some of the designs in the Swing Swagger and Drape book you are going to fall in love with this yarn. I'm planning on bringing it in for July.

If you're local go to the Farmers Market next Saturday the 12th and stop by the Prescott Knitter's table where they'll have a "taste" of this yarn you can try.

Crochet Hankering

I don't know what is up with me, but I'm on this crochet kick. Probably because all my knitting projects are stockinette stitch (snore). Anyway, I found the most beautiful shawl pattern to crochet. It's about 66" round and I'm using the most fine wool/silk blend from our newest shop addition Fiber Creek. I wonder when my eyes got old though 'cause I'm having trouble seeing the stitches on the fine weight yarn!

The shawl knit-along Jill is sponsoring next month on Monday nights would be a great place for you to start this crochet piece. She's not teaching, per se, but she does crochet and could get you unstuck if need be. I'll post an in progress picture soon as it gets a little bigger.....

Open House!

Come meet the instructors this Friday 5/28 @ 5:30! Jill, Pat, Jeannie, Pamela, Carma, and Kristin will all be there displaying samples for the projects they'll be teaching this summer. Our focus for the summer months is learn a technique in one sitting and go. Most things you'll be able to finish in class. Pop on in for a quick break in air conditioned comfort. It will get hot eventually, you know.

Wow! I always forget how much I like to crochet until I do it again. My grandmother taught me to crochet when I was 8 years old. We don't need to say how long ago that was but it sure does bring back some comfort memories. Sugar Rush!

You should (and can!) see the lovely shell I made using Queensland's Sugar Rush. 100% sugar cane viscose-- it is soooooo soft and gorgeous too! I should post a pic of me in it! It's one of the best items I've ever knit! Come on down to A Good Yarn and see/feel for yourself!

Oh, boy! I tried to copy some files to a flash drive from the cash register data base, and you guessed it, I wiped everything out. After much tinkering and clicking buttons (after all, it can't get more broke, can it?) it's finally back up and running. Saturday we had to hand write tickets all day. I know, I can't believe I know how to make change without the computer telling me!

May 1st Carma Koester will begin selling yarns and supplies for spinning and weaving at A Good Yarn. Classes are ongoing with wheel spinning and rigid heddle weaving beginning May 13th. Space is limited so call right away! Then, Katie Baird is teaching all about Ravelry, an online group for fiber enthusiasts, Saturday mornings at 10:30. Only $10!

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Come celebrate early at Knit & Sip (crochet too!) this Wednesday 12/30 at 5:30-7:30. As always bring your project and get some help or just sit and chat. THEN, it's a new year already and what better way to start it off than learning a new sock technique? Saturday, January 2, 1:00-3:00 Pamela still has 3 spots open to learn a cable and diamond patterned sock. If you can already make basic socks come join fellow sock enthusiasts and learn something new. This class happens again on Thursday 1/7 at 10:00 a.m. with Jeannie if you can't make the Saturday class. Jeannie has 3 openings as well.

I cannot believe I've decided at the last minute to make some gifts. I do it every year and every year I swear I'll never do it again! But, my son's slippers are wearing out and he "loves them so much" that I just have to make another pair. Why don't you make a pair too? Come see me and we'll talk....

Plus, we've got some great crochet classes coming up that we need samples for so I'm designing a crochet readers wrap. Jeannie's working on a new crochet felt purse, Jill has sock of the month wrapped up with a Gansey design, Pat is finishing up a lace scarf out of shaded sock yarn, and Pamela has a silk wool knit button cowl almost completed. Wow! We're giving you lots of interesting things to do in January! I'll post pictures as soon as everything is done.

The shop is sponsoring a creative knitting workshop with Valentina Divine on Sept. 18th and 19th, Friday and Saturday. She is known for sitting down with yarn and needles and creating the most beautiful hand knit items. She just sits down with yarn and appropriate size needls and will show you how to do the same! Summer is the best time to knit and crochet. I've already finished 2 Christmas presents! Most of my presents are small and quick the perfect size and weight for summer knitting/crocheting. The two scarves that are class projects this weekend make perfect gifts. Friday evening 5:30 to 7:30 is the Crochet Persian Leaf Scarf, and Saturday afternoon 1:00-3:00 is the Blooming Cotton Scarf. You can see pics of this in previous posts. Think gift giving!!

Then again, this Blooming Cotton scarf is another one of my summer favorites. This one is a free pattern on knittingdaily.com. Pamela made this beauty out of Cascade Pima Tencel and it is THE softest material ever! It's made in the round and then cut. Gorgeous!

It's hot here! I love this dry heat, step in the shade and instant cool. Unlike my home state- O-H-I-O. Jeanne, one of the charity knitters, completed sewing together 467 squares making them into 24 lap robes. You go Jeanne! Those charity knitters can put out lots of items. I just mailed 28 sweaters to Guideposts Sweater Project for Kids. I love those ladies!

Drop in and check out the new Louisa Harding cottons that just came in. I have the pattern books to go with them too! Cool and delicious summer shades in cotton/rayon, cotton/linen, 100% pima cotton; and a cotton/hemp blend. Look forward to seeing you!

I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Cheryl of Cherry Tree Hill Yarn and her daughter Jenna The Indie Dyer at my shop last Saturday. What a couple of down to earth wonderful ladies! The shop was a buzz of activity and they just fit right in - introductions around the knit pit and all. Thanks to both Cheryl and Jenna for sharing some time with us discussing everything from dyeing to maple sugar.

Are you a crochet snob? You'll only crochet and NEVER knit? I must confess, I was at one time. Probably because the knitters I knew didn't consider crochet "real". Like it was cheating -- cheating at what? So I steered clear of any knitting for years. Time wasted, I know, but crochet still has a special place in my heart. Check out this crochet market bag we're making this month at the shop. The other picture is our own very talented Claire Werner with her exquisitely stitched crochet blanket. Awesome! Why not get that crochet hook out of moth balls and crochet something! Remember how fast crochet goes! Cotton wash cloths are still functional and beautiful!

THE PERFECT KNITTING DAY

Dagmar Zauels, one of the many talented knitters at A Good Yarn, in her sweater made from sock yarn. You read it right, sock yarn! It is stunning isn't it?

What is your perfect knitting day? It is snowing, blowing, and generally icky today - in my mind the perfect knitting day. Snuggling up in a sweat shirt (or jamies) with a brand new project is my idea of a good time. Be honest now, isn't it yours too?

However, I must finish this pair of socks I started a month ago. I'm doing them 2 at a time on one circular needle and it's taking FOREVER. I finally put one on stitch holders so I could just get on with it. The technique is very easy and the yarn doesn't really tangle I just feel like it's slower than slow. I suppose if I timed it out there would be little difference and it is nice to have them both done at once. The method kind of takes the fun out of getting bored and making the second sock in a different pattern though. These socks are for someone else who probably wouldn't like 2 different socks even if the yarn is the same. Try it sometime. No one ever notices unless I point it out. Are you a fellow sock addict? Well, it's a week into the new year and what are you knitting? We are all excited in the shop to try Fair Isle knitting. This picture is the tam we'll be making. Exquisite! The class is 2 parts and we're offering the class twice. Once on Monday mornings the first two weeks of February, and again on Wednesday nights the last 2 weeks of February. Pat Hughes will be teaching and you ought to see the yarn! Sign up soon because space is limited and both classes are half full already!

Pamela has agreed to do private lessons on Wednesdays between 12 and 5 P.M. Call me to set up an appointment. Any of you who have worked with Pamela before know she's the most patient instructor ever!

Jeannie is starting the Ramblin' Rows afghan January 15th, Thursday 10 to noon. It's an ongoing class through Thursdays in January.

Hello and Happy New Year! Time to get this blog moving! The shop has been so very busy this past month and we've been super excited planning classes for the new year. Check out the class schedule on the web site to see what's happening. If you can't make it in for a class why not call me up and I'll mail you the pattern and yarns.

We've had a great year! Here is a pic of our charity knitters who created and donated over 1000 items! We knit and crochet for Warm Up America then donate the blankets to our local shelter; as well as hats, scarves, and mittens. We donated hats for children in Romania, items for the Iowa flood victims, sweaters for Guideposts as well as Arizona Children's Assistance. We did numerous helmet liners for soldiers too. Lately, we've been working on items for the new Prescott Area Women's Shelter. A HUGE thank you to all who participated throughout the year. Come join us in 2009.

Before I forget, I have the last 10 skeins of Cherry Tree Hill's December Limited Edition sock yarn - Silent Night. Hurry and call me if you want one of these beautiful skeins. When these are gone, there are no more as I got the last ones.

Whew! We just finished up our Design Your Own Pattern Class. We had 9 participants, and all said they learned alot. A few looked a little glassy eyed when they left though..... Sock of the Month Club is set to begin September 9th. We have some excellent plans for this club. The yarn and pattern will be exclusive to club members only each month. The class fee is only $10 per month, AND class members receive 15% off class materials. Hereafter, we'll meet the first Tuesday of the month. There are only 4 spots left so hurry and reserve!

Block of the month is for crocheters the 2nd Tuesday of the month(except it's Sept. 16th this time), and for knitters the 3rd Tuesday (except it's Sept. 23 this time). We'll be making 6 different, intricately stitched 12 x 12" squares. You'll make 6 other easy pattern squares to complete a lapghan to give as a beautiful gift or keep for yourself. The class fee is $10 per month, AND you'll receive 15% off class materials. There are a few spots left in each of these classes. Contact me via email or phone for more info or to sign up. Open stitch is for all you crafty needleworkers to get together for assistance, sharing, and fun! We magically transform the "knit pit" into the "stitch pit"! Every Thursday afternoon beginning September 4th, our very own Jeannie will host an open stitch for all you needlework artists - embroidery, cross stitch, and needlepoint. Bring your stitchery and get some assistance, share your creations and just sit and chat while you stitch. This is not a time to learn how to do needlework (we have private lessons for that), but a time to get an opinion or ask a question. Come join us Thursdays starting in September from 1:00-4:00.
